DVD REVIEW

Movie

I had high expectations going into this movie.  The front cover had a quote of “The best comedy since the 40 year old virgin."  Well I would say this movie had its moments, but it was not as funny as some people would have led me to believe.  The basic premise of this film is Nick Naylor (Aaron Eckhart) works for the tobacco industry.  His job is to put a positive spin on any situation that comes up, while trying to remain a role model for his twelve year old son. When Nick had to deal with a senator (William H Macy) who is bent on putting a stop to cigarettes, Nick is at his best, accusing the senator of killing people with Vermont cheese, made in the senators home town. I liked the movie, but I think I was looking forward to it too much, and was let down a little bit.  One of my favorite parts of the movie is with the MOD squad (merchants of death).  They spend their time sitting around talking about how many people they kill.  Overall it’s a pretty good satire.

Video

Overall I would have to say this is a good looking DVD.  The colours are bright and they look awesome in the opening credits.  I did not notice anything that really stood out, except a little bit of grain in some scenes.

Audio

The movie comes with a 5.1 track but since it’s a comedy, don’t expect a lot.  Dialogue comes across clear when it has to.  Scenes with large crowds give you a hint that the movie is in 5.1

Extras

Here is what’s included:

  • Commentary: Jason Reitman
  • Commentary: Jason Reitman, Aaron Eckhart and David Koechner
  • Deleted Scenes with optional director commentary
  • Charlie Rose Interview
  • Making-Of Featurette
  • America : Living in Spin Featurette
  • Poster Gallery
  • Art Gallery

I was disappointed with the extras in this set.  The commentaries were good, and first time director Jason Reitman adds a lot of insight.  The deleted scenes are worth watching because all were fully produced.  Plus you can hear Jason’s reasoning for cutting them.  The Making Of Featurette was your typical fluff piece with the actors commenting on the movie.  America : Living in Spin was again mindless in my opinion.  When looking at the back of the box and seeing all the features listed I thought I was in for a treat, but sadly this is not the case here.

Overall

Overall, I say give this one a rental.  If you end up really liking it, then go out and pick up the dvd, because even though the extras aren’t that hot, the picture and sound quality are good.
