Product Review:

Boynq Sabre

Today I will be reviewing the Boynq Sabre.  If you read my last review on the Boynq Icube II speaker system you will remember that I was impressed by how much sound was produced by such a small speaker.

The Sabre is a lightweight speaker system which makes it very portable.  The only problem is that it does not give you the option to run on batteries, which limits its portability.  Trying to describe its looks is difficult.  It looks a sheet (of toilet paper) hanging off a roll.  The dock sits in the front flap.  The speaker system comes with 6 different dock inserts to make it compatible with pretty much every Ipod out there.  There was not an insert that would fit my 3G Nano unfortunately.  There are a total of 4 buttons on the front of the unit.  When you press the power button it lights up.  The other 3 buttons control volume, bass, and treble.  One thing I noticed was that the little line on the controls is difficult to see unless you’re close up to the device.  So in the future, they should probably make it easier to see.

There is a metal grill covering each speaker.  Like the Icube II, the back of the sabre contains inputs for line-in and line-out as well as an s-video connection and the dock connector.

So how does it sound?  Not bad!  It definitely was able to play really loud without distortion.  But the sound was muddy when playing compressed MP3’s.  I found I was able to tweak the sound using the bass and treble controls and get a clearer tighter sound.  But the system definitely isn’t going to win any awards for sound.

The test unit that I had was the Pour Femme version which means that it is a pink colour.  So I had to swallow my reviewers pride while using the pink coloured speaker system.

There are tons of different speaker systems on the market.  So what would make you choose the Sabre?  If you’re looking for a system that is versatile, that can use other mp3 players other than an Ipod, the Sabre has you covered.  They even include all the cables, which is a nice addition.  Other than that I am not sure I would recommend it.  For a price of $99US I would have expected more.  The Icube II had a budget price going for it, so one could overlook some of its shortcomings.  But the Sabre costs a lot more and unless you’re in love with the styling I would suggest looking elsewhere.
