Movie
For those of you who can’t afford your favourite Star Trek series box set, Paramount is giving you the opportunity to get some of the best episodes all in one set. For those of you who don’t know these are sets are called fan collectives. They pick a topic, such as “The Borg, Klingons, Q, and then let the fans vote for there favourite episodes. These can be from any of the trek series whether it be the original series all the way up Enterprise. These sets retail for around $40, so is it worth your hard earned dollars? That is what I am going to try to find out. The first set in the series that I am going to review is the set that focuses on “Q”. First off it doesn’t look like anyone voted on this set because it includes every episode the “Q” had appeared in. But that’s not a bad thing. I would imagine if you’re buying this set you liked the character, and therefore would be pleased at getting all the episodes. The episodes are presented in broadcast order. So here are the episodes you are getting in this set:
Disc 1 Encounter at Farpoint (TNG 1.1 - Series Premiere) Hide and Q (TNG 1.9 – Back to test Riker) Q Who (TNG 2.16 – Introduction of the Borg)
Disc 2 Deja Q (TNG 3.13 – Q had been kicked out of the Continuum) Qpid (TNG 4.20 – Sherwood Forest to play Robin Hood games) True Q (TNG 6.6 – A young intern may be a Q) Q-Less (DS9 1.6 – This episode sees the return of Vash. We see her depart in Qpid)
Disc 3 Tapestry (TNG 6.15 – Best of the set….hybrid of a Christmas Carol forcing Picard to get to see what his life may have been if he hadn't made a crucial bad decision as a young graduate from Star Fleet. All Good Things (TNG 7.25-26 – Series Finale)
Disc 4 Death Wish (VOY 2.18 – About the right to die) The Q and the Grey (VOY 7.19 – We meet Q’s son)
I am not going to go into all the plots in each of the episodes because I am assuming if your going to buy this set you will have either seen it or don’t want me to spoil it. For me I loved ST:TNG and it was great to see these episodes again. I had not seen many of the Voyager episodes so this was also great. I really liked the character of Q and therefore really enjoyed seeing these episodes.

Video All the episodes are presented in a 1:33:1 full screen aspect ration as they were originally broadcasted. Personally I think these episodes look better than I remember them when they were originally broadcast on TV. Don’t expect anything amazing, but none of the episodes are unwatchable. Some have the occasional fleck of dust. 7 out of 10

Audio For the audio you get Dolby Digital 5.1 or 2.0. There is not much going on here; you get the occasional ship fly by and the low rumble of the engines. The dialogue comes across nice and clear and even though I would have liked them to go back and re-mix the episodes to give the explosions more power they preserve the original sound very well. 7 out of 10

Extras The only extras for this set are 3 text commentaries by Michael and Denise Okuda. They are for Deja Q, Q-less, and Death Wish. I have never been a fan of text commentaries. But at least they included something. 1 out of 10 |

Overall If you’re a fan of the Q you will love this set. It includes all the episodes and there presented with decent picture and audio quality. Being a fan of the extras I was disappointed by the lack of anything decent. If you’re happy with just the episodes then you will be more than happy with this set. 7 out of 10 |
