DVD Review:

Pirates of the Caribbean

"At Worlds End"

Movie

I really liked the first movie but I felt the second one was too long and I did not like it as much. I had heard good things about the 3rd and final installment in this series, and I never got a chance to see it in the theater. I found it funny that they could make a trilogy of movies out of a Disney theme park ride. It just goes to show that if you have a good writer they can pretty much turn anything into a story. This film brought back one of the characters that I liked from the first one and that is Captain Barbossa which is played by Geoffrey Rush. I really thought that character was played well by Rush and he does a good job here. At worlds end was a good tie up of all the loose ends that were left in the previous 2 installments, but I still felt it did not live up to the first movie. I also felt that there were so many characters that it could be a little confusing at times. But having said that I still found it an enjoyable flick. The CGI is awesome, there are some genuinely funny moments. If you own the other 2 installments on DVD you will be definitely picking this one up anyway to complete the trilogy. You could do far worse! It was a fun movie and ultimately that is what your looking for in a movie.

Video

All I can say is wow! The transfer here is stunning. Everything is super crisp and there are so many shades of different colours everything comes across brilliantly. It's one of the better standard def transfers I have seen year. It might even qualify as the best. This is reference material folks and something you will pull out to show off your system!

Audio

The audio is also brilliant. There is a lot of loud action and they do an excellent job of mixing little subtleties in with the loud. Everything envelopes you and you fell like you could almost be on the ship in the thick of battle. The sound will be coming from all channels be prepared to be blown out of your living room

Extras

Here is what you get in the way of extras:

  • Keith and the Captain: On Set with Johnny Depp and The Rock Legend
  • Bloopers
  • Deleted Scenes
  • The Tale of Many Jacks
  • Anatomy of a Scene: The Maelstrom
  • Masters of Design - Creating the World of Pirates
  • The World of Chow Yun-Fat
  • Inside the Brethren Court
  • The Pirate Maestro: The Music of Hans Zimmer
  • Hoist the Colours - The Story Behind the Song
Now my favorite of these has to be Hoist the Colours. This is a 20 minute making of showing you how they constructed the Maelstrom sequence from beginning to end. They talk about how they had to build 2 life size ships and how they pulled off the stunts and even the finishing of the final effects. Its well done and worth watching. The other extras are interesting as well. It was interesting to see the Johnny Depp and Keith Richards feature that's for sure. The extras are pretty decent. If you have read my other reviews, you will know that I live for the extras. I would have to say this set of extras are good but not jaw dropping great.

Overall

I would have to say this is a great set and worthy of a buy. If you have the others that this is a must get. If your not into the whole pirates thing I would still suggest you at least give it a rental. I really liked it and I thought the transfer was excellent and so was the sound. Plus you get some decent extras as well.

Recommended.
