DVD Review

I know that we are supposed to approach each film review with a sense of optimism, but when I became aware of having to review John Tucker Must Die, I was not looking forward to it.  Honestly, I can't stand the typical “teeny-bopper” type of films that are being made in the past as well as currently.  They are not my cup of tea so to speak.  This film falls into this category with no exceptions.  Cue the stereotypical cheerleaders, sports jocks, Gothic clans, “teen-rock” and any cliché you can think of, it's all here.  For being a comedy, I didn't find myself laughing much, maybe once.  Not good.

For the record, this “Sweet Revenge Edition” includes both the theatrical version and the extended cut not available in theaters.  I choose to view the wide screen, extended edition.  It has Dolby 5.1 Surround and the wide screen version is portrayed in anamorphic 1.85:1.  Also included on the disc is lots of audio commentary, a few deleted scenes, an “On The Rebound” featurette  and a special performance by People in Planes of their song Instantly Gratified.  Also for the record, I do not know who these guys are.

The wide screen edition appeared fine to me, I was not expecting anything extra ordinary or anything, as I think this was not incredibly important.  The transfer is fine, nothing to complain about, nothing special.  As a side note, however, I did like how they did the DVD menus and such; kind of  like a Mac OS desktop theme or something, anyway it was different and smart.

The audio, as mentioned above, is delivered by 5.1 Dolby Surround.  Once again, your typical presentation.  I have no complaints about the audio as well.  Maybe I would have favoured it more if it were not for all the typical teen-rock junk that kept spewing through my 5.1 setup.

While this disc does include some extra features, I found myself not caring to much about any of it.  About the only thing interesting I found in the extras was the “On The Rebound” featurette.  While brief, it kind of showed you how they pulled off all of the basketball scenes.  Interesting to me I suppose.  The deleted scenes were useless, I completely understood why they weren't included and the quiz I simply could not put myself through.  It was nice that they included what they did, but I just felt that most of it would only appeal to perhaps the 13-16 female demographic.

As you must have already known, I can not recommend this disc to anyone other that who it was obviously targeted to, 15-ish young girls.  There's  just to much of the typical teen genre crap in this to take, not to mention the fact I hardly laughed at all.  It was also far to predictable, but I guess that's what you get in these types of films these days.  Let me put it this way, if you are between the ages of say 13 and 17, and you're female, you will enjoy this movie.  If you are not, do not waste your time.
