DVD Review:

Live Free or Die Hard - Unrated

Movie

I was always a fan of the Die Hard movies. When I heard they were going to do another one, I was happy, but a little concerned. Would Bruce Willis be able to pull it off? Also they were using Justin Long. In case you don't know he is that guy from the I am a Mac, I am a PC commercials. So that got me a little worried. I saw this movie when it came out in theaters and I raved about how much I liked it. At that time it was rated PG-13, and a lot of people were saying it lost some of its edge that makes it a Die Hard film. I still really enjoyed the movie and didn't notice to much that John Mclean was not dropping F-bombs every other sentence. So now on DVD is the unrated edition. This is more like the Die Hard we all know and love. Bruce Willis is definitely back and and he is just as good as he always was. Justin Long was the person I was most surprised by. He was really funny and did an excellent job in this film. The movie is the best Die Hard since the first movie came out all those years ago. It was in my opinion one of the best action movies of the summer. If you liked the other Die Hard films, your going to love this one.

Video

I thought the transfer on this film did a good job. Most of the shots take place in very grey areas. But the colours shine through when they have to. Nobody is going to look at this disc and complain about the transfer. It gets the job done.

Audio

The audio on the other hand shines. This is definitely the loudest of the Die Hard films. If you have a surround sound system, be prepared to be in the middle of gun fights and other huge explosions. It's definitely utilizes your home theater system well.

Extras

Here is what you get in the way of extras:

  • Commentary with Director Len Wiseman and Bruce Willis
  • Analog Hero in a Digital World: The Making of Live Free or Die Hard
  • Yippie Ki Yay Motherf*@ker!
This might not seem like much but what you get here is actually very good. Analog Hero in a Digital world is roughly around 90 min's long and is not the traditional fluff you usually find in making of documentaries. It was intrusting to see how much care and attention there was to making this a well done sequel. Yippie Ki Yay Motherf*@ker! is just Kevin Smith and Bruce Willis sitting down and talking about the Die Hard films. But what makes this interesting is how candid they are. It's almost like the cameras are not rolling and your just listening to them talk.

Overall

I would say that if your a fan of the Die Hard films you will love this movie. It's a lot of fun and there are lot of cool action sequences. The extras are pretty decent and you get all the language back that was missing from the theatrical release. Pick this one up now and all I can type is Yippie Ki Yay Motherf*@ker

Highly Recommended.
