DVD Review:

James Bond Ultimate Editions

Volumes

3 & 4

Movie

I won’t go into the details of every movie, because most of you buying these volumes have seen all the James Bond films.  A lot of people have complained that you’re forced to by these sets with films you don’t want to own.  I don’t know if I necessarily agree with that.  For me and, I would think, any fan of Bond are going to want all the volumes anyways.  For volumes 1 and 2 I only got a sample of each set.  So I can only go by the two I saw.  The ones that I received were Diamonds are Forever and Die Another Day.  They were both excellent and as you will see with the rest of my review of volumes 3 and 4, worthy of your hard earned cash.  Volume 3 includes these films:  From Russia with Love, For Your Eyes Only, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, Live and Let Die, and Goldeneye.  On Volume 4 you get: Dr No, You Only Live Twice, Moonraker, Octopussy, and Tomorrow Never Dies.  I started watching Bond films when Pierce Bronson was Bond, so I never really got into the old ones.  After watching all of these sets I knew I was missing out.  All of the films have something special in store.

Video

If you have owned any of the special editions before, sell them, or throw them away!  These are the sets you want to own.  The restoration they did on these films is unbelievable.  They look like they could have been shot yesterday.  The prints are clean, the colours are spectacular.  John Lowry and his company did an amazing job.  The picture could not look any better.  This was the most impressed I have been in a long time.

Audio

Again they have gone above and beyond the call of duty.  Each film has had the audio remastered.  Each movie now has a DTS track that brings these films into the modern age of home theater.  The DTS tracks create a depth to the sound expanding the soundstage and giving the surrounds a workout.  A lot of care was put into the making of these sets and it shows from the audio to the video.

Extras

It is going to take you a long time to go through the tons of extras included in these sets.  Each movie contains a second disc that has so much material, that you’re going to have to take a week off!  One of my favorite extras was on the Dr No set.  It was called license to restore.  It is an in-depth look at the restoration process of these films. Judging by how good these films look, it was quite interesting to see how the process works.  Another extra that I found weird yet interesting was called “The Guns of James Bond.”  It talks about a British guy who wrote to Ian Flemming and told him that in Casino Royale Bond’s choice of weaponry was wrong.  His criticisms must have worked because Flemming later changed Bonds gun to the Walter PPK.

Overall

I don’t think I have to say it, but if you’re a fan of James Bond you owe it to yourself to pick up Volumes 1, 2, 3, 4.  The upgraded transfers, the re-mastered audio, and the huge amount of quality extras are worth the price of the dvds alone.  All 4 of these sets deserve 10 out of 10.
