DVD Review:

Futurama:

Bender's Big Score

Movie

Were you one of the people who were really disappointed when Futurama got canceled? I know I was but now it's back. Well not on TV anyway, at least not yet. They are currently creating 16 new episodes of the program. The first 4 episodes will be released on DVD as four DVD movies. They will eventually air on television as individual episodes. I just finished watching it and I have to say, that I am thrilled that I am able to watch new content. If your a fan of the series you will be happy to know that it tries the Futurama community everything they could possibly want. You get to see appearances by almost all the characters that have ever been on the show. I am not going to go into the plot, because that would ruin it for you. But if your a fan of Futurama your going to love this DVD. Bender's Big Score is a resounding success and it is worthy of sitting next to the other seasons of the show.

Video

When talking about the transfer of this movie, one has to remember that this is a cartoon, that being said I thought it looked great. The world of Futurama is a colourful one and the DVD does a good job of producing that. There isn't a whole lot more I can say about the transfer other than I think they did an adequate job, and I am sure if they release a hi-def version it will

Audio

This disc boasts a 5.1 surround sound track. It won't blow you away but there are enough directional effects to make it worth while. Also the dialogue comes across nice and clear. The audio is what it should be for a movie such as this and it gets the job done.

Extras

Here is what you get in the way of extras:

  • Commentary By Matt Groening, David X. Cohen, Billy West, John DiMaggio, Phil LaMarr, Claudia Katz, Dwayne Carey-Hill and Ken Keeler
  • Futurama Returns! A Live Comic Book Reading By The Futurama Cast Featurette
  • Everybody Loves Hypnotoad - A Spellbinding Episode Of The Future's Most Popular TV Program
  • A Terrifying Message From Al Gore - Animated Promo For An Inconvenient Truth (with Video Commentary by Al Gore, Matt Groening and David X. Cohen)
  • Bite My Shiny Metal X - A Mind-Shattering Futurama Math Lecture Featurette
  • Bender's Big Score: The Original First Draft Of The Script Featurette
  • New Character/Design Sketches
  • Original Five-Minute Comic-Con Promo
  • 3 Deleted Scenes: Robot Mafia, Monte Carlo, and Limbo Contest
Going through the extras I was not that impressed. For me the best extra on the disc is one that I usually don't have the time for and that's the commentary track. Pretty much all the major players are here and it's one funny track. Another extra that I liked is is Everybody Loves Hypnotoad. This is an episode of the future's most popular show. I will tell you that it is 22 minutes long, but that is all that I will tell you.

Overall

I would say that if your a fan of Futurama, than this is a no brainer. It's a lot of fun, includes many cool cameos and has a decent picture and sound. In the extras department there is a fantastic commentary track. Fan's have been waiting for Futurama to return and it's great to know that all is well even after such a long hiatus.
