DVD Review:

Bee Movie

A Very Jerry
2-Disc Edition

Movie

I had high hopes going into this movie. Having liked Seinfeld the TV show I was sure Jerry's wit would shine through. Critics seemed to be mixed. Some loved it and some hated it. Now I wouldn't say I hated the film, but I was definitly expecting more. For those of you who don't know what the movie is about here is a brief plot summary. Barry B. Benson, a bee who has just graduated from college, is disillusioned at his lone career choice: making honey. On a special trip outside the hive, Barry's life is saved by Vanessa, a florist in New York City. As their relationship blossoms, he discovers humans actually eat honey, and subsequently decides to sue us. This is one of those movies where certain things just iretated me. I know the little kiddies will probably love this movie, but to me it just seems like they didn't have a great story. I could have come up with some of the ridicolous things that happen in this movie. Jerry has a few jokes that I found funny but that's about it. I found myself groaning just a little too much in this movie. This is the first review that I am going to give two scores one for adults and one for kids.

6 out of 10 (Adults)

Video

I thought the transfer was bright and colourful. Usually with a CG movie the transfer is usually flawless. I wouldn't say it was flawless but it definitily looked nice on my widescreen TV. The movie is bright and vibrant and this is a very colourful movie and it shows. Overall a respectable transfer.

Audio

One thing I noticed when I first started watching this was that the audio mix seems to focus on the voices and drown everything else out. To me you miss the most important part and thats the music. Jerry's voice can get a little annoying after awhile and it always seemed to be the same volume....loud. So for me the audio mix was dissapointing. There were some nice directional effects but not enough to raise the score here.

Extras

Here is what you get in the way of extras:

  • Commentary with Jerry Seinfeld
  • Jerry's 16 TV Juniors
  • Alternate Ending and Deleted Scenes
  • Jerry's Flight Over Cannes featurette
  • Meet Barry B. Benson featurette
  • The Buzz about Bees featurette
  • Inside the Hive: The Cast of Bee Movie featurette
  • Pollination Practice Video Game
  • We Got the Bee music video
Out of these I though the tour of Dreamworks was funny and interesting. The Jerry Seinfeld commentary was hilarious as it should be. The other production featurettes were interesting as well focusing on sound recording, story boarding etc. Overall you get a fair amount of quality extras.

Overall

If you're a child under 10 I think you will like this movie. If you're an adult you can at least give it a rental. There is a decent transfer and some good extras which make it at least watchable. But there are some scenes in this movie that will make you groan.
